Anthony Kennedy Shriver founded the original Best Buddies Chapter at Georgetown University in 1987. However, in January 1989 Best Buddies International was Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Best Buddies® becomes America’s first national, unified, social, and recreational program for people with intellectual disabilities.

In 2017, Opeoluwa Alonge and Amaka Mokwe got connected while on international duties and they agreed to establish the Best Buddies chapter in Nigeria. Finally, in December 2018, Best Buddies Nigeria was approved by the international body, thus our operations began in Lagos Nigeria.
